COMMUNITY NEWS

  • This weekend, local venues offer a busy schedule of events. Enjoy Hello Saturday with fairytale storytime and Lego building at 10 a.m. at the Public Library, join the Pokémon and Board Game Club at Delafield Public Library at 11 a.m., or visit Pancake Fest and Handmade Market at the Expo Center.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Many community events take place this weekend in Waukesha County, including a Pokémon-and-Board-Game Club at Delafield Public Library, a Hello Saturday event at Waukesha Public Library, and festive markets like the Pancake Fest and Handmade Market for family fun.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Residents near the proposed 150-acre sports complex in Big Bend expressed concern over noise, traffic, and rising taxes. The Village of Vernon met Thursday at 6 p.m. to vote on a resolution opposing Breck Athletic Complex — Waukesha residents passed a similar measure and worry some may have to move.  TMJ-4

CULTURE NEWS

  • Former Skid Row frontman Sebastian Bach will headline the Miller Lite Main Stage at the Waukesha County Fair at 8 p.m. Thursday, July 16, while 38 Special is set to perform on July 18, and fair admission includes free stage access and VIP seating options.  The Waukesha Freeman

EDUCATION NEWS

  • At Waukesha West High School, junior Talia Luckett built a Mock Trial Club to boost students' courtroom and public speaking skills (she was inspired by a winning debate in seventh grade). The team held its first competition against established programs, setting a path for future challenges.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Hamilton School Board primary results show that incumbent Tom Lodzinski lost (receiving 14.9% of the votes) as newcomer Cassie Hoehnen led with 649 votes while Tom Seiler got 486; Hoehnen and Seiler will advance to the April election for the at-large seats.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Local newcomers David Dodge and Paul Rains advanced in Tuesday's primary for an East Troy School Board seat — serving portions of Walworth and Waukesha counties. Dodge led in Walworth County and will face Rains in the April election.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Katie Bergmann and Colin Chance will compete for a seat on the Swallow School District Board of Education in an April election after Tuesday’s vote, where Bergmann led with 77 votes and Chance received 45 votes. Lisa Erdmann earned 33 votes, and the results remain unofficial until canvassed.  The Waukesha Freeman

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Fred Garcia, a bilingual social worker and county Juvenile Services supervisor, retires today after 32 years with Health and Human Services. He helped launch Teen Court and organize Hispanic health fairs — his retirement celebration is at Magellan’s on Main Street from 5 to 9 p.m.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Crews have resumed leaf pickup in Waukesha after being halted in December due to early snowfall and freezing temperatures; they are now finishing areas left incomplete (last fall) as weather conditions improve.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • The state Senate passed two bipartisan bills on Thursday to expand Medicaid coverage for new mothers and require additional breast cancer screenings, with Gov. Tony Evers expected to sign the measures next week - leaving Arkansas as the only state without expanded coverage.  The Waukesha Freeman

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • Muskego heating expert Craig Hoormann of Tri-Town Heating offers local homeowners tips to lower energy bills amid extreme cold and rising rates. He advises replacing restrictive air filters and scheduling regular tune-ups to keep furnaces running efficiently.  TMJ-4
