  • Holocaust survivor, author and civil rights attorney Thomas Jacobson will speak at the Chabad Jewish Center of Brookfield at 6 p.m. today, sharing his life story — from his escape on the MS St. Louis to his work in civil rights. A suggested donation of $18 supports the event.  The Waukesha Freeman

  • A Milwaukee locksmith discovered that many of the silver coins he bought were fake after getting them appraised & Brookfield jewelry experts said scammers use low prices to lure buyers as metal prices near record highs.  TMJ-4

CULTURE NEWS

  • Conley Media’s newspapers were honored by the Wisconsin Newspaper Association for General Excellence after the Oconomowoc Enterprise earned first place and The Freeman and Washington County Daily News received second and third awards—accompanied by recognitions for writing, photography, and layout.  The Waukesha Freeman

EDUCATION NEWS

  • More than 1,000 middle and high school students learned about health care careers at the Discover Health Care Expo on March 3 at Waukesha County Technical College (including hands-on CPR practice and X-ray readings).  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Cassie Hoehnen and Tom Seiler are competing for an at-large seat on the Hamilton School Board ahead of the April 7 vote. They will present plans to address declining enrollment, budget pressures, and improve communication with families.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Persuasive letters from Horizon Elementary third-graders led author David A. Kelly to write two Brewers-themed mystery books and visit the school, where over 600 students enjoyed a book signing on Feb. 19. The event showed the power of student writing in sparking creative work.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • With three other school districts already testing student-athletes, Waukesha School District is considering random drug testing for student-athletes and activity participants after School Board Clerk David Wadd requested the measure on the agenda, and the district will review the proposal (pending community input) at its upcoming meeting.  The Waukesha Freeman
