COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Fun local events abound this weekend: Today, Spring Ladies Night unfolds in downtown Oconomowoc from 4 to 8 p.m. with store specials; Saturday brings a VCY America Rally (doors open at 5 p.m.) at the Waukesha County Expo Center and a Friends of HAWS Media Sale in Waukesha.  The Waukesha Freeman

CULTURE NEWS

  • That ’90s Band will play classic ’90s hits at the Aug. 11 Tribute Tuesday in Cutler Park at 321 Wisconsin Ave — food and concessions open at 5:30 p.m. ahead of the 7–9 p.m. concert.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Glencastle Irish Dance in New Berlin earned medals at the All Ireland Championships in Ireland and will compete in the World Championship soon. The group has built a strong, family-like atmosphere through years of dedication to Irish dance.  TMJ-4

ECONOMY NEWS

  • This winter, WE Energies bills soared due to freezing temperatures and high gas costs, leaving residents shocked. Waukesha tea shop owner Selina Wietzel — whose business faced cuts to employee hours — reported nearly doubled expenses.  TMJ-4

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Waukesha School Board approved the sale of Hawthorne Elementary School to Adeline Montessori (a charter school in Oconomowoc) at a Nov. 12 meeting as part of its Optimizing Our Future facilities plan to address declining enrollment.  The Waukesha Freeman

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On March 6, Milwaukee Rescue Mission filed a petition in Waukesha County Circuit Court asking a judge to issue a zoning permit for its New Journey recovery facility at I-43 + Moorland Road in New Berlin. The petition warns that delays could cause significant damages as local groups continue to challenge the project.  The Waukesha Freeman

HEALTH NEWS

  • HAWS received a $6,000 grant from ASPCA Spay/Neuter Alliance to buy four new pulse oximeters and update its pet spay/neuter clinic. The organization will use new techniques learned during recent training in Asheville (North Carolina) to better serve pets in the community.  The Waukesha Freeman

SPORTS NEWS

  • Laura Dwyer of Lac La Belle and teammate Steve Emt showed determination at the Paralympics Wednesday in Cortina D’Ampezzo when Latvia secured bronze with an 11 to 10 win in the mixed doubles wheelchair curling event (a dream experience for Dwyer with her family nearby).  The Waukesha Freeman
