COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Construction resumed on the North Lapham Street bridge in Oconomowoc after a partial collapse on April 25 as officials ordered additional inspections and safety measures while residents remain concerned; the river should reopen late May or early June and the project will finish in early September.  TMJ-4

CULTURE NEWS

  • Kurt Meske, known as Captain Laser, once energized Kettle Moraine High pep rallies with his flag-waving shows, and his spirit lives on. The school district is now exploring new mascot ideas that honor his musclebound legacy — a nod to a cherished past.  The Waukesha Freeman

EDUCATION NEWS

  • The Kettle Moraine School Board is reviewing a new look for Captain Laser (options include a refreshed design, futuristic style and Pleistocene-era cat) after student votes raised issues with its condition. Voting data from the April 28 meeting showed a costume may cost $10,000 and take six months to make.  The Waukesha Freeman

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Waukesha County Parks announced that Stacy Yearling is the new supervisor of Retzer Nature Center, replacing retiring Janet Barthel in March (she brings 20 years of experience) and plans to boost community programs at the site (483 acres on Madison St).  The Waukesha Freeman
