Good morning, Waukesha. Here's your local news at a glance for Friday, the 9th of May.

EDUCATION NEWS

  • For the past six weeks, Oconomowoc High School seniors have helped residents at Shorehaven Senior Living with phone and computer problems—many older people need help when they do not have family nearby. Teachers say the program teaches useful life skills and it will resume in the fall—students learn to solve everyday challenges while giving back.  TMJ-4

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Rep. Scott Fitzgerald from Wisconsin’s 5th district said on May 5 via social media that Judge Dugan behaved wrong — calling her actions outrageous — and on May 7 stressed that strong secret rules are needed to keep America’s lead in AI. He voted YES on H.R. 276 on May 8 to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.  Waukesha Times
  • Sonia Schneider, a Gulf War veteran and Waukesha police officer with stage 1 ovarian cancer, was first denied benefits under the PACT Act but her appeal in late February approved a 90% disability rating—giving her about $2,400 monthly. The denial was based on a claim that her cancer was not linked to her service despite the law presuming such connections for veterans exposed to toxins.  FOX6
  • State Assembly Rep. Scott Allen announced on May 8 at Dady-Oh’s Restaurant that he will run for mayor in spring 2026 to fix the city's money problems — he is worried about a growing deficit. He said his work on the Community Development Block Grant board and on the Common Council and his job as a business owner and real estate agent will help him face challenges while current mayor Shawn Reilly has not said if he will run again — offering a fresh choice for voters.  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel
