COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Schramka Funeral Homes in Brookfield invites residents to donate their worn-out American flags as part of its Final Act of Honor program — a ceremonial retirement process following U.S. flag protocol. Donations are accepted at 13220 W. Capitol Drive during business hours ahead of America’s upcoming 250th anniversary.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Waukesha County holds remembrances this week ending May 16 for service members who died in war; the observance honors a Vietnam War veteran who lost his life on May 15, 1970 and others whose sacrifice shaped our history.  Waukesha Times
  • Waukesha VFW Post 721 is recruiting volunteers for a Memorial Day march with participation by scouts, local police, and fire units. The solemn event starts at 10 p.m. on May 25 downtown and features a riverside ceremony at 9 a.m. plus a program at Cutler Park at 11 a.m.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • YMCA of Greater Waukesha County announced that CEO Chris Becker will retire (July 31) after a 40-year career, including 30 years as head, and current COO Geoff Mertens is set to become CEO (Aug. 1).  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Waukesha County beaches opened May 8 for the 2026 season and are available from sunrise to sunset until Sept. 27; six locations include Fox Brook, Menomonee, Minooka, Mukwonago, Muskego, and Naga-Waukee.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Schramka Funeral Homes launched its Final Act of Honor program in Brookfield, inviting residents to donate worn American flags for respectful retirement during veteran services.   • A $23 million project is turning the former Olympia Ski Hill (1340 Snyder Way in Oconomowoc) into The Social, a family-friendly venue featuring indoor pickleball courts, a cafe, arcade, and beer garden that is set to open in January 2027 with outdoor hill activities in spring.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Oscar's Frozen Custard reopened Tuesday on Moreland Boulevard after an 18-month rebuild following a fire that destroyed its long-standing shop. Owners welcomed locals back to savor burgers, fries, and classic custard (the new building marks a fresh start).  FOX6
  • First Federal Bank of Wisconsin will close its Summit Ave branch in Waukesha and its Milwaukee branch on Silver Spring Drive this Friday to focus on digital banking—leaving the bank with one location in Waukesha after reviewing customer needs.  The Waukesha Freeman

CULTURE NEWS

  • Local museums will offer a passport program in Waukesha County that lets visitors collect stamps to win prizes and learn about local history until year's end. Walworth County will also offer its own passport at Mukwonago & Eagle with a Museum Route map available online.  The Waukesha Freeman

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Prairie View Elementary School in Mukwonago received one of two Fork Farm Hydroponic growing towers donated by the Mukwonago Rotary Club with proceeds from the 2025 Jack-O-Lantern Jaunt. Students water, test water pH, and add nutrients (learning about food and growing lettuce for the meal program).  The Waukesha Freeman

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Nine companies in Waukesha County underwent FDA inspections in Q1 2026, showing a 125+ increase from the previous quarter, with all food and cosmetics operations meeting FDA standards.  Waukesha Times

LIFESTYLE NEWS

  • HAWS welcomed 24 beagles (18 adults, six puppies) from Ridglan Farms on Tuesday, May 12 as it began socializing the dogs ahead of upcoming adoptions and foster placements. The shelter scheduled spay/neuter surgeries and paired shy dogs with outgoing ones to boost their confidence.  FOX6
