Good morning, Waukesha. Here's your local news at a glance for Wednesday, the 25th of June.

COMMUNITY NEWS

  • The Oconomowoc Area Senior Center hosts 800 seniors from across Waukesha County who join in games, crafts, and other activities — giving them a place to make friends and stay active. The center holds about 150 events each month that help members cope with life changes while sharing moments of fun and support.  TMJ-4
  • Brookfield officials moved forward Tuesday with a funding plan for a public market at the north end of Brookfield Square Mall (the former Boston Store site). The new market, which may include a two-story glass-enclosed building with vendor stalls and outdoor seating, now awaits final council approval and a public hearing on Aug. 11.  TMJ-4

CRIME NEWS

  • A Waukesha man, Adam Malinski, pleaded no contest on June 18 to three charges—reckless endangerment, carrying a concealed knife, and battery—after a street fight on Aug 26, 2024 that led to a stabbing; his sentencing is set for Aug 21.  FOX6

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Autumn Hill Academy received a $1.2 million grant through the Wisconsin Charter Schools Program subgrant competition to open a new tuition-free public charter school at N25-W23050 Paul Road in Pewaukee this fall. The fund includes $600,000 available in 2025 — the remainder is pending based on the enrollment size.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Oconomowoc Gold Award Girl Scout Alexandra Higbee received a $5K national scholarship on June 14 at American Family Field for her Mini Food Pantry project that offers 24/7 food access at Okauchee Lions Park. Higbee, who studies nursing at Valparaiso University and developed the project to help tackle food insecurity, said the award will ease her college costs — she began planning the project in summer 2023 with strong local support — and shape her future in healthcare.  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The Wisconsin Supreme Court ruled on Tuesday that state regulators can require landowners to clean up PFAS contamination before these chemicals are officially deemed hazardous. The 5-2 decision followed a lawsuit by a dry cleaning business in Oconomowoc and marks a significant win for environmental advocates.  The Waukesha Freeman

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Waukesha County Public Works Committee meets tonight at 7 p.m. at the Waukesha County Courthouse (Rm 2-1200, 515 W. Moreland Blvd) to recommend ending transit routes 904 and 905 due to low ridership. The routes, connecting Lake Country communities to downtown Milwaukee, are proposed to end on Sept. 27 pending a final board vote.  The Waukesha Freeman
