COMMUNITY NEWS

  • City workers continue building an all-inclusive playground and splash pad at the Pewaukee Sports Complex designed for children of all abilities. Officials said the facility will open later this month once final construction work is completed.  The Waukesha Freeman

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A 49-year-old man from Greenfield died when his motorcycle collided with a turning vehicle at the Bluemound Road and Sunnyslope Road intersection in Elm Grove at 4:06 p.m. Thursday—authorities are investigating the crash.  The Waukesha Freeman

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Spirit Halloween (affiliated with Spencer Gifts) will open pop-up stores in six suburban Milwaukee locations, including a store on Sunset Drive in Waukesha, to use vacant spaces that once held major brands; the seasonal shops will operate mostly in September and October with leases running from mid-July to mid-Nov.  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

CRIME NEWS

  • A 19-year-old driver was arrested by the Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday afternoon—after a report of a dark-colored SUV with flashing blue lights on southbound I-43 near Big Bend Drive—for impersonating an officer.  The Waukesha Freeman

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Autumn Hill Academy, a planned charter school in Waukesha County, will not open this fall because enrollment fell far short of the required 168 students, leaving parents scrambling for alternative placements. School founder Maria Luther said the school expected 35 to 50 students and will hold a town hall meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Aug. 10 at N25W23050 Paul Road in Pewaukee, and she is concerned over losing a key grant that would cover costs already incurred.  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The senior dining site at Oconomowoc Community Center will close on September 12 due to reduced federal funds, which will force seniors to access meals from other sites. County officials and community leaders say the decision comes after low diner turnout and funding cuts—alternative options such as home-delivered meals will continue to be offered.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Waukesha County Deputy District Attorney Abbey Nickolie will return to her former role as assistant district attorney effective today—her decision was personal and no replacement has been named yet. DA Lesli Boese said Nickolie remains a valued member of the office after serving since 2012.  The Waukesha Freeman

HEALTH NEWS

  • A Waukesha County man beat stage IV pancreatic cancer with strong treatment from MCW doctors and now shares his message of hope after a tough diagnosis. He will speak next week at Dinner on the Diamond fundraiser at American Family Field—an effort to boost research on the illness.  FOX6
