COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Wildlife In Need Center had its air conditioners fail after historic storms raised indoor temperatures and staff used ice for baby birds’ water in the nursery since Aug. 15. Within 36 hours, donors gave $30,000 to buy two new units to cool 7,000 square feet of its facility (a vital step in the recovery), easing the strain on the center.  FOX6

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • A fire broke out in two units of a building at The Meadows apartment complex on the west side of Springdale Road in Waukesha on Aug. 25 shortly after 4 p.m.—displacing six families and causing about $200,000 in damage as firefighters responded while residents evacuated without injuries.  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

CRIME NEWS

  • A Glendale woman was convicted Tuesday for killing her longtime friend Richard Platt in New Berlin on Feb. 12—she will be sentenced on Nov. 20 as prosecutors called the act brutal and her defense said she acted in self-defense.  The Waukesha Freeman

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. John’s Northwestern Academies will host Wisconsin Service Academy Day on Sept. 6 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at its campus—1101 Genesee St.—where young adults and families will meet military academy recruiters and senators Baldwin and Johnson to learn about the nomination process.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Hadfield Elementary’s 4K classrooms were severely flooded just weeks before school started, forcing teachers to salvage materials and delay classes until Sept. 8. Crews are working to rebuild the damaged areas — teachers appreciate the support from the community as they prepare for a safe new start.  TMJ-4
  • Prairie Elementary Principal Carly Solberg met with her team today to reenergize and plan for the new school year (focusing on reading and math) and said that welcoming students back will spark excitement and growth across the school. GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Waukesha Village Board will review changes to the fireworks ordinance at its meeting on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at W250-S3567 Center Road—proposals include limiting fireworks before 7 a.m. and after 10 p.m. and raising the required insurance from $500,000 to $1,000,000, and the board will also provide an update on the recent flooding.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Today, the Waukesha Plan Commission will review a proposal to expand Bridge Church at 1314 S. Grand Ave—this project would add 23,720 square feet to create new worship, classroom, and ministry spaces while updating the building’s exterior. The plan also calls for removing a building at 1312 S. Grand Ave and adjusting driveway access to better manage traffic.  The Waukesha Freeman
