Good morning, Waukesha. Here's your local news at a glance for Saturday, the 30th of August.

ACCIDENTS NEWS

  • In January a five-year-old boy died when he tripped during a bus transfer outside Silver Spring Intermediate School in Sussex, and his family says calling the death an accident is misleading because unsafe protocols put children at risk; the school district later changed bus drop-off procedures (the bus driver cooperated and was not charged).  The Waukesha Freeman

CRIME NEWS

  • The Waukesha murder case of 63-year-old Kevin Lychwick, charged with killing his neighbor and hiding the body found wrapped in a tarp, has been delayed after his trial scheduled for Sept. 8 was removed from the calendar—his new attorney, Pablo Galaviz Jr., is set to appear in a hearing soon.  The Waukesha Freeman
  • Darrell Brooks Jr., serving multiple life sentences for the 2021 Christmas Parade incident, filed his 10th request for an extension to file his appeal—saying his transfer to a Sioux Falls prison limited his access to the voluminous court file needed before the earlier June 3 deadline.  The Waukesha Freeman

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Carroll University had its largest move-in day on Aug. 29 when athletic teams helped the new Class of 2029, which includes students from 18 countries, settle into campus. President Cindy Gnadinger said the class—40% of whom are first-generation college students—will help shape the university's future.  FOX6
  • North Lake School District enrolled 365 students in the 2024-25 school year—a 3.7% increase from last year according to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. About half the students are boys and 91% are white, and the district serves one school in Waukesha County.  Waukesha Times
  • Hadfield Elementary has postponed the start of its 4K program (for 4-year-old students) until Sept. 8 because flood damage in joined classrooms required extensive repairs while other grades begin Sept. 2.  Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

HEALTH NEWS

  • Six months after a routine tonsil surgery nearly cost him his life, 12-year-old Liam Klaver returns to school in Muskego with a feeding tube and scars. He faces strict activity limits—he will not play team lacrosse again.  TMJ-4

SPORTS NEWS

  • A Waukesha County judge did not rule on a temporary injunction in the lawsuit filed by Blayne and Jenell Seidl over their son Tristen’s eligibility to play for Arrowhead; the hearing is set for Friday at 8:30 a.m.—Arrowhead will also provide its input in the case.  The Waukesha Freeman
